Michelle Gaffaney

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER

& FOUNDER OF GREENSTONE

Michelle has been designing homes and commercial spaces for over 30 years. With experience that spans the UK, USA, Canada, China, and New Zealand, from private residences and hotels to schools and community projects.

In 2006, she founded Greenstone Design to bring together her design expertise and construction knowledge, offering clients a fully hands-on, personal approach. Michelle is passionate about creating spaces that feel right for the people who live and work in them, blending thoughtful detail with practical design.

HOW I DESIGN

Before I ever start drawing, I walk through the space in my mind. I picture how light moves through it, how people flow from one room to another, and how each corner will feel to inhabit.

For homes, I think about the person - the family and pets, who live there — how they wake up, where they drink their morning coffee, what they reach for first.

I notice the things they already love: the colours they’re drawn to, the objects they’ve kept, the views that make them pause, the flow from one room to the next...

For commercial spaces, I start by imagining the moment of arrival... how someone feels as they approach the building, step inside, and move through the space.

Every decision, from orientation to texture, is made with intention.

It’s a process rooted in empathy, attention to detail, and atmosphere — crafting spaces that don’t just look right, but feel right.
